Great for safe play time for ferrets esp when you can't ferret-proof your house. If you have a climber like I do now they can escape over the top even if you use the mat as a cover. Wish sides of playpen were taller.

Contrary to the comment below, it does work well as a cage subsitutute. The thing is though that it's only a good cage substitute when you get a "Marshall Small Animal Playpen Mat/Cover" aswell. The Mat and or cover keeps the walls secure. You could even use the cover if your afraid of them jumping out. I bought one an djsut use the mat because my little guy can not jump not climb out. I did get two covers/mats in case, but ended up not needing to use one as a cover. I've had my ferret for 5 years, and this is the best cage for him yet. Lots of room to play, if I can;t take him out one day, and he can't get out :).
I would suggest this to anyone who's had issues with multi leveled cages, like i have. This is safer, and alot roomier for your ferret. If you want something less bulky though, there is a slightly smaller 8 panel version that also has a mat/cover that can fit that size.
All the best of luck with your purchases!

I see some reviews suggesting the purchase of this instead of a regular cage. This is a really bad idea.
Over time my ferrets have worked out several ways to escape this playpen, and while I still use it when traveling, it requires supervision.
How do they get out? One way they do it is by simply climbing up the side. It takes some real effort, but they can manage it. Sometimes they work together and push the sides of the cage towards a nearby object (sofa, curtains, you name it) and use the object as a climbing aid. Sometimes they push the sides until they form a "v" and use them as a ladder. Sometimes they take advantage of cage accessories, rearranging them as needed. And sometimes they move it over an uneven surface and escape underneath.
The point is, ferrets are strong and smart, have unlimited time, energy, and motivation, and even the manufacturers of most playpens warn against unsupervised use.

I have owned this playpen for 5 years no, I raise Maltese dogs, use it all the times, and recommend it to everyone who buys a puppy from me. I can use it inside or outside and I bought an extra tarp just incase I wuld need it and I still have not had to get it out. I am planning to purchase another one for a friend this Christmas and just thought I would add my review. This is a GREAT buy!

Great pen. No more noisy ferrets biting the cage. I recommend it to someone who is considering buying a new cage. Its safer than a multi-level home and is 1/4 the price. Only con is that couple vertical bars arent low enough to put the water feeder on so I tied it to the pen. Lots of ferret roaming space. A great buy.

I bought this 11 panel playpen with the mat a little over a month ago. Best purchase yet for my ferrets. I have a sense of security now. I know where my boys are, no longer getting into the sofa. Plus, they get alot more exercise now. Great when cleaning the cage out too. Plenty of room for them to romp around in. Add a few toys and their happy. Would also recommend mat, big carpet savior. No escapes as of yet.

I have 2 fuzzies, one of which is an extreme escape artist. She tries and tries, but can not get out of this! Generally, I try not to buy Marshall products, but settled this time and i'm glad a did!

I have been using this playpen for about two years. It is easy to set up, easy to use, and pretty easy to move around. I put a large piece of vinyl under it for easy cleanup. I have two rabbits and four ferrets who all love being in it.
I would have given it five stars all around. But one of my ferrets can escape from it with no problem at all. He jumps up, grabs the top bar with his front feet, pulls himself up, and goes right over the edge. It only takes him a second to do. So as much as I like this cage for my rabbits and other ferrets, I just have to deduct stars from a ferret cage that can't keep all the ferrets inside!

I own 8 ferrets and wanted to provide them with a safe place to play and this was the perfect answer. A few of my fuzzies are quite the escape artists but I have had this product for quite some time and so far, none have managed to "breech the wall." I actually bought two of them and put them together to make one massive pen and it makes an excellent, safe place for all of them to romp around in!

I own 13 ferrets and I had to just buy another large playpen for my fuzzies , They romp and play and just have a blast with this playpen.
We go to the beach every weekend and what better way to show what ferrets do best.I know that my ferrets love the great outdoors and I would recommend this playpen to all ferret lovers out there.

This is a great playpen...but not for my ferretts. They wanted out and they got out no matter how secure I thought I had it. What I am look for is a pexi-glass cage like in the pet store. Please sell one of those pet store open cages and I will buy it!! Love your site!

I have a small jersey wooley and use this for her permanent home pen. She likes the freedom...and can be in on all the house happenings! (She is a nosey girl!) I have ferrets too but wouldnt use this for them...its too small. My boys and girls have their own room so this is too tiny and thwy would figure out how to get out. But for more laid back ferrets I would think this would work fine.

it would be the ideal cage for ferrets who are content with being behind bars. my ferrets would rather run around the house, so they have found ways of getting out. I to have had problems with the conectors that conect the pannels. they break off and can get out. or they can climb the whole cage. I wish they didnt do this so they could have freedom all the time. they need to design this cage differently.

This works great on a patio or deck, no possable escape. On the lawn you need to watch more carefully. You can place the cages (we connect two to make a larger play area) on slate or patio block. You can fit an infant pool inside for summer fun or put some of their favorite toys in with them.

It's good to park ferrets in, but isn't as secure as a cage. With frequent use, the eyelets that hook together drop off, and the ferrets can squeeze out. (Luckily my cats let me know that the ferrets had bolted.) I started using twist ties to keep the pen closed, but then the ferrets started climbing out. I stopped using it unless I was around to supervise.

I have used this pen for 2 years for my house rabbit. He has plenty of space to stretch out or roam around at will. I use the mat for the bottom and it makes it a breeze to clean up any messes that may occur. I'd have a spare one on hand so you could use one and have the other one washed and ready. Great product!

When I looked online at this I did not expect it to be thing big. It is huuuge and my two ferrets have lots of room to run around all day. It is tall too so mine can't climb out. I recommend this 100%.

This play pen is great! I would totally recommend this to anyone with ferrets. My only concern is if you have a dare devil ferret. Although one of our ferrets is a climber/jumper.. she can not get out. On the other hand after almost a year of having this play pen she finally figured out how to dig under the playpen and escape into the yard. Luckily we were right by her so we didn't lose her! I just hope my other two won't follow in her foot steps! So now i am going to purchase the mat that goes underneath the playpen and hope that it will stop any other break outs!

I was very happy after buying this playpen, my one girl, who is quite small sized adult lady now, was spending a lot of time in it. But soon she learned how to jump and hook her front paws to the upper bars and climb out of it, now it takes her about 30 seconds to escape ... even the top cover doesn't help. Multiple ferrets might be busy in this playpen and NOT practicing jumping only. I'm going to try a recommendation which I've seen somewhere - to put duct tape over the upper bars, so that the bandit can't crab these.

This is a great thing to have if you have VERY active ferts as we do. when we cant supervise them every second in our room for them to roam, we set this up with all their toys. The only down side is my Boy who is a long one as firgured out how to get out. since there is a middle bar that goes horizontially he puts his front paws on it and then jumps till he can get his back paws on it and then grabs the top and pulls himself out. But my little girl cant do that. So if you have a long or big kid, then you better keep a close eye when they are in it, but I still use it all the time and they love just being out.

I'm going to relocate to Puyallup WA from Killeen TX. Driving for at least 4 days with my Polly in a small carrier. I plan to stop once in awhile for lunch, or potty breaks, maybe even sleep. This play pen will allow her the freedom she needs to strech her little legs & get crazy & me the comfort to know she is safe.

I like the playpen, but my one ferret will not be contained. He jumps to the top rail pretty easily. We tried gutter guards, but he learned to hold on to the wires and nose the guards off the frame.
We also have a ferret condo inside, and he can jump from the top to the top of the rail, and even up to the 6-inch gutter guard.
I'm planning to try a 12-inch plexiglass addition to the top, because I'm tired of having to put the ferret back in the cage because he keeps climbing out.
I'd try the pipe, but it wouldn't help for the jumping from the tall items we put inside the pen.

I dont own a ferret, but I found this playpen online by accident when I was looking for a solution for keeping my chihauhaus from having accidents on my floor in their play yard. When I seen this I knew it would be perfect for them. I was nervous about the plastic floor, cause dogs have sharp claws, but the plastic/canvas mat/cover is thick enough to withstand their nails. I am very pleased with this product, maybe a little pricey, but I did save a few bucks by ordering the 8 panel and then ordering the 3 panel extension pack. It might be only a few bucks cheaper but still thats a few bucks saved. Plus the 11 panel is not in stock until July. My puppies are happy, and this playpen is big enough to grow with them. They will only get a little bigger and so this is perfect size for them and now I wont have as big of a mess to pick up with their occasional accidents and it will save my floor!!

This is great. I have one ferret who is currently 3 months old and he is very hyper. It it way to much work to allow him to be free in the house. SO, this playpen is great. I can put all his toys in it and he can play and be safe. He pretty much lives in it and we dont even use a cage.

We also had our ferrets figuring out how to get over the top but fixed that problem by getting flexible drain tile, using a sawzall with a fine blade to make a lengthwise cut in it and placing it over the top rail. They cannot get ahold of anything to pull themselves out.

We thought the playpen was a great idea. It looked well made, the price was reasonable, for what we thought we could get out of the deal. The ferrets would have safe place to play and we could go on with our business for a time. The only problem was the ferrets learned how to get out on the first day! They jump until the can grab the first bar with their hind legs , then grab the second bar to pull themselves over. We cannot get them to stop. We have decided to invest in a second covering for the top of the cage.

We love this playpen! Our ferrets are caged with time out to play in our mudroom each day. But with the playpen we can bring them into our living room and let them be more a part of family life.
The playpen is sturdy and has plenty of room for all the stuff ferrets love to play with.
I especially like that the panels are linked; this makes for easy and extremely compact storage.
Also this product will be perfect for when we travel with our ferrets.

I purchased this pen because the width of the bars was perfect to put in between 2 rabbits that were to be bonded. I was able to pry the hinges back and forth several times to let them be together and they did not break. Worked llike a charm for what I needed it for!

I love this playpen ! .. and it has been a great investment. With peace of mind of knowing where she is, my fuzzy loves to run and play with the variety of toys, tubes, etc that we have in there for her. I can even step over the side and sit and play with her .. she LOVES that !
The only drawback is the flooring is of a material that isnt so easy to clean, as the surface is rough. You need a brush to scrub any accidents.
Otherwise its a great product. I would recommend it highly.
